Today the wind blew up to 25 knots. We couldn't
proceed up north towards Kizilburun as we had planned. Instead, we took shelter
behind a small island called Catalada, west of Bodrum. We meant to dive near
Yassiada, a small island to the southwest, to photograph a series of wrecks that all met
the same fate on a large reef. The sea was too big. The Coast Guard paid us a visit as we worked on the boat. A friend of Tufan and Yasar's, the captain came on board to see how we were doing, and to bring news of the upcoming weather. He had noticed that the Virazon had left the harbor at Bodrum, and wanted to wish us luck on our trip. |

Two Coast Guard boats hid from the wind, 40 meters from our stern. As I'm writing this, they are still moored at their anchorage. It seems they will spend the night with us. Always nice to have an escort.

Behind the island, we set about preparing the boat for the days ahead. On the 4th we are to meet a German film crew that is making a documentary on underwater archaeology, so we want to make sure the ship is in good shape. Tufan scraped barnacles and other marine life off of the prop, which will make it much more efficient. I installed a small transducer, for our new depth sounder, to the hull of our dinghy. Works great. The old one was mounted outside of the hull, and had some problems with cavitation from the prop. All of the dive gear was checked. The boat is ready. Now we wait for the wind to subside. Tomorrow we hope to begin work in earnest.
