Again the strong winds from the north forced us to change our plans. Instead of a long day at sea, heading towards Sagik, we moored near the ruins of the ancient Carian town of Myndos. This area was known for a special wine famous for its salty taste. Treated with sea water, this wine was thought to aid digestion, and enthusiastic consumption will not lead to the characteristic "day after."

The fortifications of Myndos were legendary, surrounded by 2 miles of defensive wall with numerous watchtowers along its length, and a harbor designed to repel attack. Here the remains of the basement of a large guard tower now lie beneath the sea. From these walls, 9 ft thick at the widest points, the citizens of Myndos resisted the repeated assaults of Alexander the Great.
| After the stop at Myndos, we continued north, but soon decided to wait another day for the winds to die down. We are now moored at the Yalikavak peninsula, with a beautiful beach and calm water. We're a little worn from the rough seas, and Murat's cooking has made us all sleepy. Tomorrow we wake at six to begin a ten hour push north. | ||||
