The
harbor at Sigacik is full of small fishing boats. The Virazon looks a little out of
place. It was a slow day, spent fixing things on the boat and watching the life of
the harbor. Tufan went to Izmir, a nearby city, to see about our broken phone and
some other errands. The repairs on the windlass are proceeding nicely. The
mechanic should be back tomorrow to reinstall it, and we'll be on our way.We don't really have anything interesting to report today, so we figured that we'd put some extra images. Berta and I walked through the medieval streets as the sun was going down and took these pictures. Sigacik is a beautiful town. |

These kids were absolutely thrilled
by our digital video camera. As soon as Berta started shooting, they surrounded her
laughing and waving for her attention. After she finished, she passed the camera
around for each to have a look through the viewfinder. They practiced their English
on us, 'hello' and 'thank you.'The picture does not show it very well, but notice the small brown circles on the palms of their hands. At Turkish weddings it is custom for the bride to stain her hands with henna. The longer she keeps it there, the darker the mark, a symbol of her devotion to her husband. The other women at the wedding join her in celebration. |
