Next summer, the Institute of Nautical Archaeology plans to excavate a 5th century BC shipwreck west of Sigacik. We've begun surveying the site, gathering information that will help the directors plan ahead. An excavation is a considerably complex undertaking. A camp must be set up, with a conservation lab, recompression chamber, sleeping quarters and eating facilities for 25 people, not to mention the resources needed to excavate the site. | |

Today we completed three dives on the wreck, a collection of
amphoras clustered between three large rock formations. We measured the site, about
9 meters by 5 meters, and did a rough count of the number of amphoras, around 65 necks.
We took photographs and video of everything. Tufan and Yasar climbed up the hill to get an idea of how a camp might be situated. The terrain is very steep and uneven. Concrete will have to be poured to place the recompression chamber on a level surface. It is a very difficult site to build a camp. Photographs and video that Tufan shot will be helpful in planning what will be needed for the construction. With a GPS (Global Positioning System) in the dinghy, I made a rough track along the shoreline, used to place the dive platform close to the wreck. |
