A southerly wind picked up again today and we were unable
to return to the 5th century BC wreck that we worked on yesterday, waves smashing against
the rocks where we would have needed to moor the Virazon. Instead, we powered to a
cove called Kokar Limani, well protected from winds from the south. Tufan snorkeled
along the shoreline where he had found an ancient wreck carrying plates, but couldn't find
it again. We have a simple video editing system on board, and I worked on a 30 minute documentary on the Institute's excavation of the Uluburun Wreck, which has completely changed preexisting notions of Bronze Age maritime trade. We've also started up a highly competitive backgammon tournament. Backgammon, 'tavla' in Turkish, is one of the most popular games in Turkey, and being a bit less schooled in its intricacies, and having a rather disappointed streak of terrible luck, I'm at the bottom of the ladder. At this point, Uluc is favored to win, but anything can happen. |
