After a few dives on the west of Sarpedere Koyu, we moved
the Virazon to the next cove to the east, where we decided to do the two last dives of the
day. Yasar and Uluc went first, and found a new wreck, the third of the season.
Yasar is winning the wreck finding competition. Everybody wants to dive with him.
Seems he's the lucky one. "Yasar's wreck" covers a rocky slope starting at 8 meters and descends all the way to where the seagrass starts at 31 meters. The artifacts found are very damaged and a concretion formed by water-born sediment has cemented them into several concentrated blocks. Under the seagrass, Tufan found many more fragments of amphoras with the help of a metal detector, which also seems quite adept at finding pottery. The wreck shows, at first glance, a great variety of amphora types, at least seven different shapes, fragments of which are all concreted to each other leaving no doubt that all come from the same ship. Examples of them are shown in the pictures. Last night Tufan and Jevon finished one of the films that they have been working on about the excavation of the Uluburun Shipwreck. It's taken them over a month to get it done, and both were relieved to see it completed. Jevon, who's been doing all of the editing, cannot even tell if it's any good. He's watched it too many times. Tonight there we'll have the grand opening, and see what the rest of the crew thinks. This morning we return to Sagacik. Seems Murat efendi bought about five kilos of cheese, enough to feed all the mice in New York City for the winter, but we've run out of water, and the rest of our food is depleted. After buying supplies, we'll turn around and head back to work. There's no rest for these intrepid wreck hunters! |
