Hi, Tufan Turanli here,

I am the Director of Surveys for the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) in Turkey. I will be showing you some exciting shipwrecks of Turkey during your virtual visit to the Mediterranean.

You will be meeting my research ship the Virazon, my team and of course myself. We invite you to visit our page daily and see the wrecks we are diving on and researching. We also hope to be able to share our new discoveries with you.

To give you an idea about our intentions, here is a small resume of our 1998 program.

We are going on some of the most exciting archaeological dives in the area. At Yassiada, twenty minutes from Bodrum, a reef that comes within one metre of the surface has been the cause of numerous shipwrecks over the centuries. Two of these ships have been excavated by INA and the reconstruction of one is on display in the Bodrum Museum.

In Knidos, a picturesque ancient harbour twenty-three miles south of Bodrum, we will dive on a Roman and a Byzantine wreck on either side of the peninsula.

Atabol Reef will be another of our stops. Just like Yassiada this rocky outcrop has been the scourage of sailors in the area and there are a number of wrecks to prove it.

A visit to the Institute’s current excavation of the 9th century Byzantine wreck in Selimiye will give you an idea about how underwater archaeology works.

This is only a glimpse of what awaits you as you join us this summer and fall...
