From time to time, people that are interested in what we're doing come to visit and experience life on the Virazon first hand.  Some dive with us and some don't, but everyone enjoys their stay.

ayhan.jpg (12101 bytes) ayhanname.gif (1692 bytes)
Ayhan joined INA for the first time on our 1975 Seytan Deresi project.  At that time Ayhan, Tufan and Cemal were well known as the "Bronze Age swingers." They gave great concerts using the empty jerry cans in the camp... they had, eventually, to move their training sessions to another beach, far a way from camp, at the request of other campers...

After many years of collaboration with INA as a volunteer, he became one of our Directors.  Now he is the promoter of a non-profit organization in Turkey that supports underwater archaeology:   TINA   (Turkish Institute of Nautical Archaeology).  He is now visiting the Virazon with a group of guests from the same organization (23-27 September, 1998)

You can contact him at ayhan@diveturkey.com

sezgin.jpg (10083 bytes) sezinname.gif (1622 bytes)
Doctor Sezgin grew up with INA since he was a teenager.  Then, after completing a course in hyperbaric medicine, he became INA's doctor on a number of excavations.  Now he is too busy in Bodrum to join us for more than few days a year, but he is always welcome.

murat agirnasli.jpg (10313 bytes) muratname.gif (2251 bytes)
He is escaping from his textile business in New York on a last-minute phone call from Ayhan...he did not even know where he was coming to...
Unlike most of the other guests, Murat stayed with us on the Virazon and shared the real survey life.  He describes himself as a recreational diver, but... after the Virazon experience he is becoming a dedicated diver and maybe he'll join us on future projects.

sedat.jpg (13969 bytes) sedat.gif (1656 bytes)
Sedat is a big business man from Istanbul; his business is spread all over Turkey and the world.  Despite the stress and his heavy work schedule, he always finds time to visit the Virazon during our surveys. He has been joining us for many years.
While everybody else came by boat or had to be picked up in Sigacik, Sedat convinced his son (with his daughter-in-law and his 4-months-old grandson) to drive him right to the bay were the Virazon was anchored, Kokar Limani. After enduring tough mountain roads, "reaching the Virazon was, simply, a miracle."
He brought with him his underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) so the non-divers can enjoy the shipwrecks.

Because they are part of the main force behind TINA, it is great to have Caroline and Mustafa ( and their daughter, Esra), who are also great divers. Besides being formal members of a previous survey, they have visited other INA projects often.

Engin is a driving force behind Tina!!  both TINAS! Engin and Tina have been very important for the foundation of TINA. Captain of his lovely boat "Infinity", Engin is a good diver. We really enjoyed his stay with us. He helped Berta measuring and mapping the wrecks.

sabit.jpg (7833 bytes) sabitakca.gif (1024 bytes)
Sabit Akca was schoolmate of Tufan, our captain, who almost came as a volunteer for INA in 1975 when Tufan and Ayhan came for the first time.  Unfortunately, at that time he had to cancel his participation in the project for personal reasons.  If he had not, who knows what would have happened...maybe he would not be a businessman!  Maybe it is finally the right time for him to join INA projects as a member of TINA.

halil.JPG (12932 bytes) halil.gif (1037 bytes)
He is not a diver, but he greatly enjoys being out at sea and being around when other people are diving.  He is helpful and nice to have on the Virazon.  He arrived on Cem&I, a beautiful boat- A Modern Turkish "Tirhandil", a tipical boat, where the sponge divers of Aegean sailed once.

serdar.JPG (10271 bytes) serdar.gif (1236 bytes)
A good friend of Ayhan along with Halil, he stayed on "The Cem&I"  and, like Halil, he is not a diver, although he is thinking of becoming one. After all, he shared  time and life with us on the Virazon and has seen the beautiful diving spots.
bass.JPG (10881 bytes) anngeorge.gif (1975 bytes)
As mentioned in other places on this web site, Dr. George F. Bass was the first to apply the techniques of land archaeology to underwater sites. His first excavation, of a Bronze Age shipwreck, was in Turkey in 1960 at Cape Gelidonya.  Later he founded the Institute of Nautical Archaeology, back in 1972.  Although George gets all the credits, Ann has been a very important influence in all his projects and played a very important roll in the beginning of underwater archaeology.

zeynep01.JPG (13612 bytes) zeynepsic.gif (2429 bytes)
Zeynep, although not a diver, has been a huge support for both INA and TINA.  When she and Ayhan lived in New York, she once prepared a dinner for about a hundred people for an INA fund-raisisng event held at the Explorers Club, and more than once has hosted INA events in Istanbul.

seyıt.JPG (10412 bytes) seyit.gif (1534 bytes)
Seyit is a fun guy.  It is nice that he could find some time off from his business of importing wine into Turkey to join us for a couple of days.  Nevertheless, we all missed his girlfriend Ufuk.  He stayed on Infinity, Tina and Engin's boat.

yasemin.JPG (9961 bytes) yasemin.gif (2027 bytes)
Yasemin runs VIP Tourism Agency in Istanbul, and an active TINA Founding member, so   it was a very nice experience for her to stay on the Virazon and share our work.   She is learning to dive, but has not yet been certified, so she has not been able to dive on the wrecks with us.

ender.JPG (9960 bytes) drender.gif (1281 bytes)
After living and practicing in the United States he made the decision to return permanently to his home country.  His daughter, Gul, was a volunteer on the INA excavation at Selimiye for the past summer, and now Ender Bey has had a firsthand experience with the Institute.  It was a pleasure to have him on the Virazon.
